Feeling good about how things were going with my Scherck interpretations, I though why not look at other mathematical shapes?
There are a lot of mathematical shapes, some really intricate, others hauntingly beautiful in their simplicity – what to choose was the question, wanting the challenge but at the same time not going in over my head.?
A lot of thinking and mental image making, and a bit of drawing goes on before I start making the template. Sometimes I can picture it in my mind, almost straight away, other times it takes several goes.
It’s a real challenge looking at a mathematical 3 d shape, and then create a 2-d template in your head, that will turn into a felted replica of the 3-d shape – but that challenge is part of the fun.
As I haven’t found all my wool in the containers yet, I’m having to work with what I have, which sometimes can be a good challenge, but it also brings a bit of frustration with it. Some of the wool’s that I have are on the coarser side -and therefor brings with them the added bonus of a bit of a fuzzy surface.
It can be remedied a little by adding another layer of some merino, but the strong fiber will still travel through, but the fuzz gets reduced a little bit.
The first one is a mix of different types of wool.
The next one looks very elegant with flowing lines, quite simple to look at, but not to figure out in terms of template. The sculpture is made from white merino wool.
