Fold formed copper leaf, with a heat patina.
Before I left for Tasmania there was a call out for sculptures to and outdoor sculpture prize – the theme being: The current Political Climate.
I had a few ideas but went with the idea of “A tinderbox” – The image that came to my mind, was dry curled up gum leaves, being whirled around by a warm wind, ready to ignite. I made few drawings, depicting moving leaf shapes, frozen mid movement – balancing ,as if they with the slightest bit of wind, would continue their wild dance. I created a few small templates out of paper, before I started on the ones in copper.
I made three smaller leaf shapes, refining the balance and trying to get the sense of movement just right, before I committed to a big piece of copper.
A set with a red heat patina, sealed with a clear coat of lacquer.
A set with a green patina, finished with a coat of clear lacquer.
I made two of the three big leaves, that are meant as a garden sculptures, but they are currently packed away in storage.
The two big leaves, roughly a meter in length, before I left South Australia.
I am hoping that one day I will be able to get them out of storage and create the third leaf, so the set is complete. I am not at this stage sure if i will give them a patina or not, time will tell.
